All about Cyber Monday in Australia

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the world’s biggest online shopping sale. It’s the sibling of Black Friday, but where Black Friday was originally launched for shops to offer reductions in-store, Cyber Monday is only for online shopping. Here in Australia Cyber Monday has grown over the past five years.

You can save hundreds of dollars shopping the sale with some retailers offering discounts of up to 70% off selected products. Major retailers including Urban Outfitters, Foot Locker, ASOS, Kogan, Woolworths and Booktopia all took part in the sale last year and we expect them to join again for 2018. It’s a great opportunity to pick out a bargain or two if you missed out on the discounts during Black Friday, and it’s the perfect time of the year to begin your Christmas shopping.

What was Cyber Monday like last year?

Since Cyber Monday came to Australia in 2014, it has become bigger every year. It began with Aussies shopping online at US and UK retailers who were taking part in the sale and getting their purchases shipped to Australia. Now, there are many Australian retailers taking part so you don’t need to shop overseas.

You can find discounts of 10% to 50% as standard during the sale with retailers such as Amazon, Myer and eBay taking part. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday merging together as one mass sale by many retailers, you can choose when to shop. Last year during Black Friday Australians spent more than $200 million, with fashion and travel being popular areas for spending. On Black Friday 2017 sales were up 16% compared to 2016, and we expect this figure to increase again this year. Most of the purchases were made at Australian retailers rather than being shipped from overseas.

History of Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday came from the US where the name was first coined in 2005 as a way to persuade people to shop online. It was designed to fall right after Black Friday with the two events marking the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. While Black Friday has a much longer history and started as a sale in stores, Cyber Monday was always planned as an online-only sale. Since its launch, Cyber Monday has spread across the globe to the UK and Europe. Now Australians can also enjoy shopping the biggest online sale in the world.

Black Friday vs. Cyber Monday

Black Friday takes place on the Friday before Cyber Monday. In 2018 it will be held on 23rd November. This sale is the traditional November sale event that predates Cyber Monday. You can find many products in the Black Friday sale, from fashion and household items to electronics and technology. The Black Friday sale is held in stores as well as online.

How does Cyber Monday in Australia compare to…

… the UK

Australia got Cyber Monday later than the UK, where the whole Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend has grown into a massive shopping extravaganza. There are no specific Cyber Monday figures to compare but across the whole weekend, in 2017 Australians spent more than $200 million. In the UK, shoppers spent a whopping £1.93 billion or just over $2.4 billion.

… to the USA

The US is the home of Cyber Monday and Black Friday, and that is reflected in the popularity of the sale, among both retailers and customers. Some US states even mark Black Friday as an official public holiday. Last year during Black Friday the average American shopper spent US$967. In the US, sales during the 2017 sale rose by 29% compared to in 2016. Comparing this, in Australia, sales rose by 16% compared to the previous year.
