How to choose a laptop

There is a lot to think about before you purchase a brand new laptop, from the model and size to the processor speed, storage and even the accessories. Here are some of the options to consider:

Screen Size

  • From 12 inches to 15.7 inches
  • While a larger screen can be better for working and gaming, it increases the weight and reduces portability of the laptop.

Processor Speed

  • Look at the RAM as well as the processor
  • More RAM and a good processor equals faster speed
  • Higher spec processors are usually found on more expensive laptop models.

Storage Space

  • Some models such as Chromebooks expect users to save everything in the cloud and have as little as 32GB disk space.
  • If you want to save large files such as picture and video files, you’ll need more storage.
  • Some models have as much as 1TB of space built in which reduces the need for cloud storage of external hard disk drives.
  • A solid state drive is more expensive but more reliable and less likely to stop working.

Operating System

  • Microsoft Windows is the classic operating system, of which the latest version is Windows 10.
  • Apple has its own macOS which runs on all Apple laptops.
  • Google has launched ChromeOS which runs on some Chromebooks and uses cloud storage more than the other operating systems.
  • Linux is a well-known open-source operating system but you’re unlikely to find it pre-installed on a new laptop.

  • If you’re going to take your laptop with you, you’ll need a well-padded laptop bag or case.
  • You might prefer to buy a separate mouse rather than using the touchpad on your laptop.
  • Consider buying an external hard disk drive if you have large files to save.
  • You might want to purchase software to use on your new laptop.
